"There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor." - Charles Dickens.
Laughter is the medicine that costs nothing, the therapy everyone can afford. It is the simplest form of communication. A smile can diffuse tension; a wisecrack lightens up even the dullest moments. Whether through a comedy movie, a humorous book, or a stand-up act, laughter can lift our spirits and make us feel good. It is a natural stress reliever that can help us cope with difficult situations and improve our overall well-being.
16th October marks the 71st birth anniversary of the king of comedy, Mohan Rangachari - best known as
Crazy Mohan, who wore the hats of a playwright, screenwriter, actor, and comedian. While he wrote dialogues for several movies, the ones that featured
Kamal Hassan became legendary. Crazy and Kamal were a match made in heaven, with one penning the best punch dialogues and the other delivering them with perfect timing.
Here are five best Crazy-Kamal hits that will make you laugh until your stomach hurts, even if it is the nth time you're watching it.
1. Micheal Madana Kama Rajan
It is a story of quadruplets getting separated at birth and reuniting as adults. The confusion of mistaken identities is hilarious. Even though MMKR was the second time they worked as a team after Apoorva Sahodargal proved to be a runaway hit, I have placed MMKR first on my list. I feel the dialogues and situations in this movie are incomparable. Kamal Hassan plays the four roles, nailing them with style and precision. Palakkad Kamu takes the cake with some of the best scenes and dialogues like "Ellarum meen meen chollara" and "Beemboy Beemboy, andha Avinashi naai mogathula vitteri." Mohan plays a small cameo as the grocery shopkeeper.
2. Panchatanthiram
Five friends land in a soup as their boys' trip leads them to get tangled in dealing with a dead body. Mohan gets a creative canvas since the five friends hail from different parts of the country: a chance to weave in magic with linguistic flavors, and Mohan doesn't disappoint. This laugh riot is a complete entertainer and doesn't bore even on repeat watch.
3. Vasool Raja MBBS
A remake of the successful Hindi movie Munnabhai MBBS, Vasool Raja makes its mark because of Crazy Mohan's spin. Remakes of already hit movies are usually tricky because the storyline and characters have left an impression. But, the Crazy-Kamal duo hit the bull's eye with their expertise. Again, Mohan displays his mastery over words with dialogues like "calm aa irukara aaLa coma garaLE." Kamal's Chennai accent lends the perfect flavor to Mohan's lines.
4. Avvai Shanmughi
Kamal dresses up as a woman and works as a nanny for his daughter to win over his estranged wife. Slapstick humor at its best and yet doesn't make you cringe - that's Avvai Shanmughi for you. Inspired by Mrs Doubtfire and later remade into Hindi as Chachi 420. The song Ruku Ruku Ruku is a comical masterpiece of its own as Kamal lends it his voice.
5. Apoorva Sahodargal
The same director as MMKR with Crazy-Kamal duo first collaborated in this comedy-drama. Kamal plays the father and twin sons, one of whom is a dwarf. A masala entertainer, Apoorva Sahodargal weaves in comic relief effortlessly. Kamal, as Appu, elevates the character to a whole new level - with emotions and make-up. Mohan delivers like none other with punch dialogues like naane meter ku keezha irukae: a fantastic spin on the situation and scene.
